This is the scene of the TV series’ opening episode “Oath of the Peach Garden.” At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the court lost power to eunuchs, who provoked the people in dire poverty and misery to start uprisings everywhere. Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, as the literary work has it, meet each other on the occasion of soldier recruitment. The three share the same ambition of restoring order and making peace for their country. It is in the Peach Garden where they swear, with the heaven and sun as witnesses, to be brothers who would devote their lives to loyalty.
